Mountain goat portrait I

Following up on my last post here are some additional mountain goats from last summer.* These guys have a wonderful sense of character that I try to capture with tight head shots. I love the raking sidelight on this animal, combined with the catchlight and interesting background. Be sure to click on the image for a larger version.

Mountain goat portrait II

The trap when shooting goats is that they are completely unfraid of people — I often wind up making the shots a little tighter than I planned. In this case, however, the tight crop emphasizes the strongly geometrical aspect of the goat’s face and horns.

Mountain Goat on the top of Mount Evans

For the upcoming season at Mount Evans, I hope to make more “environmental portraits” like this one. Hopefully, the opening of the mountain won’t be delayed by all of the snow we’ve had this year.

At the same time, I like to look for a slightly different angle. There are only so many ways to shoot a goat; I kind of like this angle.

*Happily, these are from last August. Nowhere near a year behind, Jay.

A Mountain Goat poses at the summit of Mount Evans, Colorado

Mount Evans will be open in a few weeks — which means that I better get busy editing and posting my Mount Evans images from last year. This Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is one of the many tame goats that like to hang out at the summit. I like the monochrome conversion, the back-lit fur, and the suggestion of mountains at right. I should note that I seem to be alone in my positive opinion of this image. But I like it enough to share. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Another Pika

American Pika with Forage

I’m slowly working through my collection of new American Pika (Ochotona princeps) images and ran across this one.   The pose makes this one for me.

This cute little guy is an American Pika (Ochotona princeps) that I photographed last weekend on Mt. Evans.  This post is a little out of order (as is evidence from my last post, I’m still working through some spring shorebirds), but what the heck.  Cute pika, made even cuter by the mouthful of greens that he’s collecting for his winter haystack.  I spent quite some time watching this guy run from his foraging patch, to his burrow, and back.  Each time he’d pause for a split second on this rock, the only place on his route where I could photograph him in good light with a clean background.  (Sometimes he’d take a detour over my foot or between my tripod legs, but that’s another story).  This is among my favorite images from the trip, though I have many more pika shots to share in a later post.

The background on this image is not quite as clean as the image above, but it I really like the pose.
