Cormorants Old and New

I was preparing to post the image below when it brought to mind another cormorant image I made in 2009.  For some reason, I never posted that image (above) even though I like it quite a bit. Gotta love that sweet morning light.  So, here are two cormorants, in the same place, and probably the same snag, but two years apart.  Which do you prefer?  Please leave a comment (and be sure to click on the images for larger versions).

Once again I am woefully behind in posting new work.  These images are slightly out of sequence (I have older stuff that I plan to post) but I like these images a lot, and there are only a few of them, so I can get them up quickly.  The image above is a great blue heron (Ardea herodias).  I like this image for a couple of reasons — the quality of the light is great  (every so slightly side-lit for texture, background in shadow), the heron’s breeding plumage is beautiful, and the pose is great.  As always, click on the image for a larger version.

The Heron flew up to me as I was photographing this snowy egret (Ardea herodias) fishing.  I didn’t make any portfolio-quality images — when they go for a fish, an egret moves  FAST — but it was a blast to watch the bird catch a half-dozen fish in the space of twenty minutes.

Finally, I was happy with this silhouette of an American avocet (Recurvirostra americana).  All in all, a pretty good day in the field.

Herons From this Morning

Preening Great Blue Heron

This morning I made a quick trip to Belmar Park in Lakewood with my father.   I intended to photograph kingfishers on a perch that I scouted during previous trips to the park.  The kingfishers were in short supply, but I’m quite pleased with the images I captured of this great blue heron perched on a nest-box stand.  (As always, click on the image to enlarge.  For some reason this image looks a little strange in the preview size above).

Black-crowned Night Heron

This is the only image I captured of this black-crowned night heron before he flew into thick brush near by.  I could see him preening in the bushes, but could not find an unobstructed angle to photograph from.

This image is a little less dynamic than the first one above, but still a keeper.
