Pan blur of Commerce City from Downtown Denver
I found these languishing in my processing cue next to the tigers that I posted the other day. These are both panning blurs, taken from my office in downtown Denver. Something about the tones in the sky captured my interest, so I made a series of exposures out the window. These are my two favorites.

One other thing that I find striking about these images are how just a little camera movement blurs away the city. Says something about impermanence, I suppose.
Denver Skyline Silhouette
This is the Denver skyline, silhouetted by the evening sun. (I used a telephoto lens to “compress” the scene and make the skyline appear close to the mountains.) Cool image. I particularly like the cranes and capital dome at lower left, along with the barely-visible ridges in the background. The only downer: the pretty yellow haze is actually air pollution — the notorious brown cloud. I still like the photo, though.
Note: I did not watermark this photo, because the watermark detracts too much from the image. Please don’t steal it though — its still copyrighted, watermark or no.
Juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron, City Park, Denver
This is another image from last summer (I’m almost caught up!). I photographed this juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) at a rookery in City Park, in Denver. The birds roost on a small island, and it is possible to get quite close in a rented paddle boat. (Actually photographing from the paddle boat is another story . . .). There is something otherworldly about these birds that I find striking. Be sure to click on the image for a larger view.
Snowy Egret (Img# 100529_1002490)
I captured this slightly dreamy image of a Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) at one of the rookeries Denver’s City Park. This is a quiet image, but I like the slight blur and the soft blue background.
As an aide, this photo is something of a lesson about not overlooking opportunities that are close to home. I’m constantly getting up before dawn to drive to some far-off photo location. I drive by this rookery five or six days a week, but it took me several years to actually photograph it. I finally made several rewarding trips this summer; this image is from my first visit.
Black-Crowned Night Heron with Nesting Material (Img# 100523_1007266)
I took a quick trip to City Park in Denver this evening to shoot at the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) and Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) rookery. I forgot the batteries for my 7D (argh!) so I shot with my 40D instead. I missed the 7D’s fast autofocus, particularly with the speedy cormorants, but it was still good to get out and shoot.
