This is another image from last summer (I’m almost caught up!). I photographed this juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) at a rookery in City Park, in Denver. The birds roost on a small island, and it is possible to get quite close in a rented paddle boat. (Actually photographing from the paddle boat is another story . . .). There is something otherworldly about these birds that I find striking. Be sure to click on the image for a larger view.

I took a quick trip to City Park in Denver this evening to shoot at the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) and Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) rookery. I forgot the batteries for my 7D (argh!) so I shot with my 40D instead. I missed the 7D’s fast autofocus, particularly with the speedy cormorants, but it was still good to get out and shoot.
This morning I made a quick trip to Belmar Park in Lakewood with my father. I intended to photograph kingfishers on a perch that I scouted during previous trips to the park. The kingfishers were in short supply, but I’m quite pleased with the images I captured of this great blue heron perched on a nest-box stand. (As always, click on the image to enlarge. For some reason this image looks a little strange in the preview size above). This is the only image I captured of this black-crowned night heron before he flew into thick brush near by. I could see him preening in the bushes, but could not find an unobstructed angle to photograph from. This image is a little less dynamic than the first one above, but still a keeper. |
