I don’t often go out looking specifically for Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias). They are generally solitary birds, widely disbursed, and difficult to approach. But every once in a while, when I’m out looking for something else, I’m lucky enough to encounter one of these majestic and ancient-looking birds. When I’m really fortunate, I find an accessible heron rookery, as I did last summer. I hope you derive as much enjoyment from these images as I did in encountering and photographing an unexpected heron.
