I apologize for the derth of posts over the last couple of weeks — I was away shooting at Bosque, and then preoccupied with work and holiday shopping. In any event, I’ve finally had a chance to start seriously editing the 5000+ images that I captured at Bosque Del Apache earlier this month. Based on my initial review, I’m pretty sure that the image above is my favorite from the trip — and I made it about ten minutes after I set up on my very first day. The rest of the trip was somewhat anticlimactic.
More images after the jump
It’s hard to make a “big shot” image of a crane or goose in flight that hasn’t already been made a thousand times before. That said, there’s something irresistible about blasting away at these guys in hopes of capturing a good image.
During my last trip to the refuge I used mostly my 300 f/4, most often with a teleconverter. This time I relied on my newish 500 f/4. The added focal length plus the slightly faster AF speed made a huge difference in my flight photography. My keeper rate was several orders of magnitude higher on this trip than the last. (Hopefully a small increase in skill accounts for some of the improvement too).
We did not have great wind for flight photography on this trip, but a couple of times we got a nice southerly wind near a patch of corn where the geese were feeding.
More images soon . . .
